Blue Bird is recalling 840 school buses due to a defect that may allow engine oil to contact hot surfaces, increasing fire risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (vent tube detachment) that creates an increased risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Blue Bird Body Company is recalling certain model year 2009-2016 All American rear engine school buses manufactured between December 7, 2008, and May 11, 2015. These vehicles are equipped with certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines. The recall affects 840 units.

The defect involves excessive engine crankcase pressures that may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather. If this occurs, engine oil may come into contact with hot surfaces, which increases the risk of a fire.

Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Blue Bird. Cummins service centers will perform the repairs free of charge, which include securing the ends of the 90-degree elbow and reprogramming the electronic control module (ECM) to limit crankcase pressures. Owners may contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 or Cummins Inc. at 1-800-343-7357.
