What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (rear shock absorber) that can lead to a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Ducati North America is recalling certain model year 2014 1199 Panigale S version, 1199 Superleggera, and 1199 Panigale R version motorcycles. The recall covers 549 vehicles that may have been built with an improperly manufactured rear shock absorber.
The defect involves the nut on the damper rod for the rear shock absorber, which may loosen. This can result in a loss of damping and the possible disassembling of the shock. If the damper rod nut loosens, shock absorber performance is affected, which may cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash.
Ducati will notify owners, and dealers will either replace the rear shock assembly or send the shock to the supplier's repair center to be remedied, free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2015. Owners may contact Ducati customer service at 1-800-231-6696 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
