Ford Recalls 2005-2006 GT Vehicles for Air Bag Inflator Defect
Ford is recalling 2005-2006 GT vehicles sold in high-humidity areas because the passenger air bag inflator may rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious injury.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect could result in 'serious injury or death' due to metal fragments striking occupants, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury reports or potential for serious harm.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is conducting a regional recall for certain model year 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles. This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or ever registered in geographic locations associated with high absolute humidity, including Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saipan, Guam, American Samoa, and certain areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia.
The defect involves the passenger side frontal air bag inflator. Upon deployment, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inflators in all affected vehicles free of charge. The recall began on January 30, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S28. This recall supersedes, in part, safety recall 14V-343 as to the front passenger air bag inflators only; the driver's air bag inflators will continue to be addressed by that recall.
