UTEC Aerial Trucks Recalled for Potential Exhaust Fire Risk

Utility Truck Equipment Company is recalling certain 2010-2013 UTEC aerial trucks and Ford chassis due to a PTO oil leak that could ignite the exhaust thermal blanket.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of fire caused by oil leaking onto the exhaust system, which meets the rubric criteria for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk vehicle defects.

Plain-English summary

Utility Truck Equipment Company, LLC (Utility Truck) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 UTLI41A, 2011 UTLN41, and 2012 UTLN46 aerial trucks. These vehicles were manufactured between December 2010 and September 2013 and are equipped with certain Muncie Power Products PTO Assemblies installed on 2010-2013 Ford F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles.

The recall is issued because oil may leak from the PTO pressure switch onto a thermal blanket covering the exhaust system. If the leaking oil soaks into the thermal blanket, the combination of the oil and heat from the exhaust may result in an increased risk of fire.

Utility Truck will notify owners, and dealers will install a new pressure switch kit that moves the switch away from the exhaust system, free of charge. The recall began in June 2014. Owners may contact Utility Truck customer service at 1-254-857-8813 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
