Honda is recalling 2013 Fit vehicles with manual transmissions because the passenger side driveshaft may break, potentially causing loss of power or unexpected movement.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (driveshaft fracture) that can lead to loss of power or unexpected vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.
Plain-English summary
American Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is recalling certain model year 2013 Honda Fit vehicles manufactured between May 24, 2013, and July 5, 2013. These vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission. The recall addresses a defect where the passenger side driveshaft may break while driving due to an improper heat treatment application during manufacturing.
If the driveshaft fractures and separates while driving, the vehicle would lose power and coast to a stop. Additionally, if a vehicle with a fractured driveshaft is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the passenger side driveshaft and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 23, 2014. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's number for this recall is JE4. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
