Fiat 500L Recall: Transmission Shifter May Fail to Shift Gears
Chrysler is recalling 2014 Fiat 500L vehicles because the transmission shifter may not respond to driver input, potentially causing unintended vehicle movement.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the transmission may fail to shift or move unexpectedly, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Fiat 500L vehicles manufactured between April 5, 2013, and January 22, 2014. The recall involves approximately 18,100 vehicles.
In certain temperatures, moving the transmission shift lever may have a delayed effect or no effect on selecting a transmission gear. If the shifter has no effect, the vehicle might not shift out of the Park position. If the effect is delayed, the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter module or update the shifter software, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 31, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number associated with this recall is P06. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
