What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a defect that increases the risk of a vehicle fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural/functional defects leading to severe hazards.
Plain-English summary
Gillig LLC is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Low Floor transit buses manufactured between August 26, 2010, and February 14, 2014. These vehicles are equipped with certain Cummins Westport model ISL G engines. The recall involves 643 affected vehicles.
The defect involves condensation in the intake manifold that may freeze during cold weather conditions. This freezing can interfere with the proper operation of the intake manifold pressure sensor. Improper sensor operation could induce elevated exhaust temperatures or flames from the exhaust pipe, which increases the risk of a vehicle fire.
Cummins Inc. and Cummins Wesport Inc. will notify owners. Dealers will upload a new ECM calibration free of charge to correct the issue. The recall began on March 20, 2014. Owners may contact Gillig LLC at 1-510-785-1500 or Cummins Inc. at 1-800-343-7357. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
