Chrysler Recalls 2013 Ram 1500 for Parking Brake Cable Defect

Chrysler is recalling 2013 Ram 1500 trucks because the parking brake cable equalizer may be set incorrectly, potentially allowing the vehicle to roll on a 20% grade.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the parking brake system that could cause the vehicle to roll and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 vehicles manufactured between December 17, 2012, and January 22, 2013. The recall involves 6,574 vehicles where the parking brake cable equalizer was set incorrectly. This defect means the parking brake may not hold the vehicle on a 20% grade, causing the vehicles to fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

If the parking brake fails to operate as designed, the vehicle could roll when parked, increasing the risk of a crash. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reset the parking brake cable equalizer if required, free of charge. The recall began on April 22, 2013.
