B & M Manufacturing is recalling 2012 HAUL-RITE boat trailers because improperly specified wheels may not tighten correctly, risking wheel separation.

What this means for you

Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 4/5 (Severe).

The hazard poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or structural failure. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (wheel separation) that could lead to a vehicle crash, which meets the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

B & M Manufacturing Company is recalling certain model year 2012 HAUL-RITE boat trailers equipped with Carlisle Transport Products brand wheels installed as original equipment. The affected models include the ABT78-TDM, ABT66-TDM, TRN63-HD, ABT78-HD, and ABT66-HD.

The wheels were manufactured with machine dimensions for the center cap and steel lug inserts that were not controlled to required specifications. As a result, the wheels may not be tightened to the proper torque during the mounting process. If the wheels are not tightened correctly, they could loosen, leading to wheel separation, a vehicle crash, or the detached wheel becoming a road hazard.

B & M will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the affected wheels free of charge. The recall began on September 19, 2012. Owners may contact B & M Manufacturing Company at 1-573-346-7246 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
