What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect that may result in a vehicle fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk fire hazards in vehicles.
Plain-English summary
Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 LEU and model year 2011-2012 MRU vehicles. These trucks were manufactured between May 14, 2009, and October 31, 2011, and are built to operate on compressed natural gas. The recall affects a total of 318 vehicles.
The defect involves the alternator ground cable, which runs directly to the starter on these vehicles. This configuration defeats the circuit protection system. In the event of an electrical short, this failure could result in a vehicle fire.
Mack will notify owners, and dealers will relocate the alternator ground cable to the engine ground stud to correct the issue. This service will be performed free of charge. The recall began on April 19, 2012. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-800-866-1177 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
