Coachmen recreational vehicles recalled for incorrect transmission gear indication

Certain 2011-2012 Coachmen Mirada and Encounter RVs built on Ford F-53 chassis may have a gear-shifter cable break, leaving the display in first regardless of the selected gear and raising crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm vehicle defect with a stated crash risk and no reported injuries in the notice, matching the High criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Coachmen RV Company, LLC is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Mirada and Encounter recreational vehicles built on Ford F-53 chassis from February 1, 2010, through February 17, 2012.

The gear shifter's cable may break at its attachment to the transmission control selector arm assembly on the steering column. If it breaks, the instrument-panel gear display may remain in first gear regardless of the gear selected. This could prevent the driver from knowing whether the vehicle is in park or reverse and increase the risk of a crash.

Coachmen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transmission selector arm assembly and gear shifter cable assembly free of charge. The recall began March 2, 2012. Owners may contact Coachmen RV at 1-800-453-6064.
