What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect may result in a vehicle fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural/electrical defects posing a high risk of severe harm.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2005 through 2007 Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2 school buses. The recall covers 3,109 vehicles manufactured between April 5, 2004, and December 26, 2005.
The recall is issued because the pass-through power cable connections located behind the driver's side kick panel may corrode. This corrosion can potentially result in an electric fault or short circuit. An electric fault or short circuit of an un-fused power cable may result in a vehicle fire.
The final remedy is currently being developed. DTNA will send owners an interim notice advising them to inspect their buses for corrosion in the area of the power terminals. If excessive corrosion is found, owners should take their vehicle to an authorized service facility for repairs, which will be made by DTNA free of charge. The safety recall began on December 15, 2011. Owners may contact DTNA at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
