Honda Recalls Accord, CR-V, and Element for Transmission Bearing Defect
Honda is recalling specific 2005-2010 Accord, CR-V, and Element vehicles because a broken transmission bearing may cause the engine to stall or the vehicle to roll unexpectedly.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (broken transmission bearing) that can lead to engine stalling and unexpected vehicle movement, creating a significant risk of crash or personal injury as described in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Accord, 2007-2010 CR-V, and 2005-2008 Element passenger cars manufactured between July 1, 2004, and September 3, 2010. The recall involves a defect in the automatic transmission where the outer race of the secondary shaft bearing may break during certain driving styles.
A broken outer race can cause abnormal noise and trigger the malfunction indicator light. More critically, it may allow contact between the transmission idle gear and an electronic sensor housing, potentially causing a short circuit that results in the engine stalling. Additionally, broken pieces of the bearing may become lodged in the parking pawl, which could cause the vehicle to roll after the driver has placed the gear selector in the park position. These conditions increase the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the automatic transmission control module software free of charge. The safety recall began on August 27, 2011. Owners may contact Honda Automobile Customer Service at 1-800-999-1009 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
