What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel system) that explicitly increases the risk of a vehicle crash due to engine stalling, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Volvo Cars of N.A. LLC. is recalling certain model year 2012 S60 passenger cars manufactured between November 18, 2010, and May 5, 2011. The recall involves 8,179 vehicles.
The software for the fuel pump units may not be compatible with all fuel pumps and components. This incompatibility can result in insufficient fuel transfer in the pump unit. Under certain driving conditions, this may cause engine hesitation and possible engine stalling, even if the fuel gauge indicates up to 1/4 of the fuel is left in the tank. This condition increases the risk of a vehicle crash.
Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the engine control module software free of charge. The safety recall began on July 1, 2011. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-201-768-7300 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
