What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (tire/wheel mismatch) that can cause tire failure and a crash without prior warning, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Pierce Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Arrow XT and Velocity fire apparatus manufactured between June 30, 2009, and March 15, 2011. The recall involves vehicles where the front axle was built with Michelin 365/70R22.5 XZA tires installed on 12.25-inch wide wheels. These specific tires require 10.5-inch wide wheels to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120.

The use of the wider 12.25-inch wheels may cause the tire bead to separate from the rim. This separation can lead to a tire failure that may cause the vehicle to crash without prior warning. The safety recall began on April 15, 2011.

Dealers will install new 10.5-inch wide wheels and new Michelin 365/70R22.5 ZXA tires on the front axle of the affected fire apparatus free of charge. Owners may contact Pierce at 1-920-832-3000 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
