Forest River Tsunami Recalled for Refrigerator Fire Risk
Forest River is recalling 2000-2006 Tsunami recreational vehicles because the refrigerator's safety shut-off system may not prevent a fire from a hydrogen gas leak.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a risk-of-harm product (fire hazard) where the source text describes the potential for fire but does not explicitly report any injuries, deaths, or confirmed fire incidents, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain 2000-2006 Forest River Tsunami recreational vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with 1200-series Norcold refrigerators that have a sensing algorithm or thermal switch designed to shut off power when high temperatures are detected. The purpose of this safety feature is to prevent a potential fire caused by a possible hydrogen gas leak.
The defect involves the response time of the safety devices. The sensing algorithm and thermal switch may not shut off power to the refrigerator quickly enough to prevent a fire if high temperatures occur due to a hydrogen gas leak. This delay in response creates a risk of fire.
The safety recall began on March 14, 2011. Forest River is working with Norcold to identify and notify affected owners. Owners will be instructed to contact Norcold dealers to receive the remedy free of charge. Owners may also contact Norcold at 1-800-767-9101 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
