What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle spindle detachment) that compromises driver control and increases the risk of a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Keystone RV Company is recalling 322 specific 2011 Alpine, Avalanche, Fuzion, Laredo, Montana, and Mountaineer fifth wheel trailers. These vehicles were manufactured between August 19, 2010, and September 1, 2010, and are equipped with Dexter axles.
The recall addresses a defect where cracks could appear in the spindle weld on some axles. These cracks can propagate and cause the spindle to detach from the axle tube, resulting in the separation of the wheel end from the vehicle. This creates a road hazard that increases the risk of a crash to other vehicles and compromises the driver's control of the vehicle.
Dealers will inspect the axle serial number and replace the axle if it falls within the affected serial number range. The replacement will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on September 24, 2010. Owners may contact Keystone Customer Service at 1-866-425-4369 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
