What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where wheel separation could cause a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Pierce Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 fire trucks manufactured between August 13, 2009, and June 30, 2010. The recall involves 273 vehicles that may have been manufactured with excessive paint on the steel wheel mounting surfaces.
The excessive paint may cause the wheel lug nuts to lose clamp load, loosen, and fall off. Eventually, the wheel(s) could separate from the vehicle and cause a crash.
Dealers will check the wheel nut torque and tighten the lug nuts to the recommended torque as specified in the Pierce Custom Chassis and Maintenance Manual. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2010. Owners may contact Pierce Customer Service at 1-888-974-3723 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
