Four Winds is recalling 2009-2011 Freedom Elite motor homes because a missing heat shield over the exhaust could cause a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (missing heat shield) that poses a risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe rating involving significant injury or property-damage reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Four Winds International is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Freedom Elite Model 21C motor homes manufactured from February 2009 through May 2010. These vehicles are affected because they do not have the required heat shield over the exhaust as specified by the chassis manufacturer.

Without the heat shield in place, heat is not properly dissipated around the exhaust of the vehicle. This condition potentially could result in a fire.

Dealers will install a heat shield between the exhaust and the residential part of the motor home to dissipate any heat accumulation. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on June 23, 2010. Owners may contact Four Winds at 1-800-860-5658 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
