BMW Recalls 2011 X5 and X6 Vehicles for Incorrect Tire Labels
BMW is recalling 2011 X5 and X6 vehicles because the tire labels list incorrect wheel sizes and pressures, which can lead to improper inflation and increased crash risk.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a labeling error that creates a risk of improper tire inflation and potential crash risk, but no injuries or fatalities are reported, fitting the criteria for moderate severity.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2011 X5 SAV and X6 SAV passenger vehicles manufactured between April 1 and May 8, 2010. The recall addresses a defect where the tire label does not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
The vehicles are equipped with 20-inch wheels, but the label incorrectly states that they are equipped with 19-inch wheels. Additionally, the stated tire pressure on the label is incorrect for the wheels actually installed on the vehicle. This discrepancy can lead to improper tire inflation, which may result in premature tire failure or reduced vehicle handling performance, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW will notify owners and provide correct labels free of charge. Owners may affix the new labels themselves or take their vehicle to a BMW dealer for installation at no cost. The safety recall began on October 8, 2010. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
