Plain-English summary
Sutphen Corporation has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of a defect in certain model year 2004 through 2010 SPH model fire trucks. These vehicles were manufactured between January 2004 and January 2010 and are equipped with Series 60 Detroit Diesel or C-13 Caterpillar engines.
The defect involves driveline vibration caused by engine mounting and alignment issues. For pre-2007 models, Detroit Diesel engines were mounted low in the frame, causing vibration. For post-2007 models, a new suspension and frame design resulted in driveline angles being slightly out of alignment for both Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar engines. This vibration can cause premature failure of the universal joints (U-joints), which increases the risk of a crash.
Sutphen will notify owners and repair the fire trucks free of charge. The safety recall began on March 8, 2010. Owners may contact Sutphen at 1-866-287-5549 or NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
