Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel system) with potential for significant injury or property damage, including fire and vehicle crashes due to loss of power steering or brake assist.
Plain-English summary
UFI Filters USA is recalling approximately 24,300 aftermarket fuel filters sold under the Purolator brand name, part number F65277. These filters were shipped between March 11 and April 27, 2010, for use on various passenger vehicles. This recall pertains only to the aftermarket parts and does not affect original equipment installed in vehicles.
The recall is due to an incorrect design that may cause the quick connectors to function improperly. If the condition occurs while attempting to start the vehicle, it may result in a no-start condition and fuel pumping onto the ground, which could cause a fire if an ignition source is present. If the condition occurs while the vehicle is in motion, the engine may stop due to inadequate fuel supply, potentially resulting in a loss of power steering or brake power assist and a vehicle crash.
UFI will notify owners and replace the filters free of charge. The recall began on June 4, 2010. Owners may contact UFI Filters USA at 1-888-787-1740 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
