CPSC Recalls Flammable Spray String Cans Due to Burn Risk

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and three firms—Stelex Enterprises Inc., Major Import, and LeSa Yang Family Ltd.—are recalling approximately 912,000 cans of spray string sold under the names "Crazy Ribbon" and "Crazy String." The recall involves round metal spray cans, about 6.5 inches high, that are silver with plastic caps matching the color of the string. The cans feature depictions of streamers and text indicating they are for party celebration and decoration, and are marked "MADE IN TAIWAN."

The recall is being issued because the propellant in these spray strings is extremely flammable, creating a serious risk of burn injuries if sprayed near an open flame, such as birthday candles. Federal law bans flammable products intended for use by children. CPSC is aware of at least one report of a burn injury resulting from the use of these products, in which an 11-year-old boy suffered serious burns during a birthday party that left permanent scars.

The spray strings were sold at party and hobby stores nationwide from October 1996 through July 1999 for between $2 and $4. Consumers should take these spray strings away from children and stop using them immediately. The products can be returned to the store where purchased for a refund.
