Plain-English summary
MacKenzie-Childs Ltd. is recalling approximately 42,000 paper candle shades in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The paper shades present a fire hazard when used with candles. The company has received three reports of the shades igniting after contacting the flame of the accompanying candle, resulting in one report of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
The affected shades are decorated with various colors, designs, beads, and ribbons, and have "MacKenzie-Childs, Ltd" printed inside. They measure about 5 inches high, 2 inches wide on top, and 6 inches wide on the bottom. These shades were sold at specialty gift and department stores nationwide from January 1992 through April 1998 for prices ranging from about $38 to $95.
Consumers should immediately stop using the paper shades with candles. To receive a free, fire-resistant replacement paper shade, consumers should return the original shade to the store where it was purchased. For more information, consumers can call MacKenzie-Childs at (800) 640-0488 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday.
