Raleigh Recalls Technium Mountain Bike Frames Due to Fracture Risk

Raleigh USA is recalling approximately 324 Technium MT 400 and FT 500 bicycle frames because they can fracture at the headlug, posing a risk of injury or death to riders.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (bicycle frame fracture) with reported injuries including broken bones, and the source text explicitly states riders could be killed, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Raleigh USA, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is recalling approximately 300 Technium MT 400 bicycle frames and 24 Technium FT 500 bicycle frames. The recall was announced on December 18, 1995.

The affected bicycle frames can fracture in the front at the headlug. If a frame breaks, riders could be thrown from the bicycles, resulting in injury or death. Raleigh USA is aware of two incidents where frames cracked or broke, causing injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to broken bones.

The Model MT 400 bicycles are red and black, and the Model FT 500 bicycles are black and white. Both models measure 16.5 inches from the center of the bottom bracket to the seat. These bicycles were sold nationwide by authorized Raleigh Dealers and bicycle shops between January and December 1993 for approximately $500 to $700.

Consumers should check the serial number located on the bottom bracket of the bicycle frame. Owners of Raleigh Model MT 400 or FT 500 bicycles with a serial number that has a 3 as the sixth digit from the left should call Raleigh USA at (800) 222-5577. Raleigh will provide the name of the nearest authorized dealer, who will replace the frame free of charge.
