What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with at least one reported fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk products where harm has occurred.
Plain-English summary
Stihl Inc. is recalling approximately 50,000 series 1127 chain saws, models 029 and 039, manufactured between March 7, 1993, and August 12, 1994. The recall is due to a defect where the ignition ground wire can wear out prematurely. If the worn wire comes into contact with gasoline or other combustible substances, it can start a fire. Stihl has received at least one report of a fire associated with this defect.
The recalled saws were sold nationally through Stihl servicing dealers for approximately $400 to $450 each. Model 029 saws have serial numbers 226585676 and above, while model 039 saws have serial numbers 227236569 and above. The model number is located on the top of the engine, and the serial number is stamped on the housing near the exhaust/muffler opening.
Owners should discontinue using the saws immediately and return them to an authorized Stihl dealer for a free repair of the ground wire. Dealers will also apply a sticker near the gas cap explaining correct tightening procedures. Consumers can contact their authorized dealer or call Stihl Inc. at (800) 467-8445 for more information.
