Plain-English summary
Amana Refrigeration, Inc. is voluntarily recalling control switches on certain models of its 208/230-volt room air conditioners in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The affected units were distributed nationwide from June 1987 through October 1991. Approximately 130,000 units were sold to consumers or remain in dealer inventory, with retail prices ranging from $500 to $600 each.
The control switches on these air conditioners may overheat while in the "off" position, which can cause a fire. Amana became aware of the potential hazard after receiving notice from the control switch manufacturer that overheating could occur. Amana is aware of 14 switch failures, but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers with one of the affected room air conditioners should unplug the product immediately, as overheating cannot occur if the unit is unplugged. They should then have the switch replaced by an authorized Amana servicer. Consumers can call 1-800-262-3121 to find the nearest Amana service center or to answer questions. Amana is also notifying owners who submitted ownership registration cards by direct mail.
