This warning applies to cubes manufactured before June 30, 1990. The cubes are 16-inch by 16-inch by 16-inch trunks used for storage and home furnishing. The warning is being reissued following two recently reported new deaths, bringing the total number of reported deaths involving young children allegedly associated with these cubes to three. These incidents occurred between February 1990 and October 1991.
The products present a strangulation hazard if the hinged lid falls on the neck of a young child reaching into the trunk. Additionally, a young child could climb into the cube, become trapped, and suffocate if the lid shuts. CPSC identifies young children under the age of six as being at the greatest risk of injury. Approximately 2.2 million cubes were distributed nationally by retailers, including Kmart and Walmart, between 1987 and June 30, 1990.
To prevent strangulation or suffocation, owners are advised to remove the metal pin from each of the two hinges to make the lid removable. Alternatively, owners who choose not to remove the lids can obtain free lid spacer clamps and a warning label by calling 1-800-766-9417. These clamps prevent the lid from slamming shut, and the label reminds users of the potential hazards.
