The preliminary investigation indicates that a crack in one of the sweeps may have caused the accident, though there was no indication that the crack had been painted over.
Although the CPSC does not have jurisdiction over permanent amusement rides, the inspection notice is being supplied to owners of both permanent and mobile "Monster" rides. The agency is sending copies of the inspection plan to all identified owners and asking state amusement ride inspectors to assist in implementing the program. The CPSC will continue to monitor the inspections and take additional action as warranted.
