Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a complaint seeking the recall of over 1.6 million Johnson & Johnson crib toys, including the Soft Triplets, Piglet Crib Gym, and Triplets Marching Band. The recall is driven by alleged strangulation hazards that pose a risk to infants.
The CPSC alleges that two young children died after becoming entangled in the strings or toys. A 10-month-old boy died in Temple Hills, Maryland, in October 1984, after becoming entangled in strings tying a Soft Triplet toy across his crib. A seven-month-old girl died in Coronado, California, in December 1985, after being caught by the neck on a Triplet toy stretched across her crib.
These toys, which consist of soft doll-like figures held together with elastic and plastic rings, were advertised for use from birth to 24 months. The Soft Triplets were sold by mail order from 1979 to March 1986, while the Piglet and Marching Band toys were sold through retail outlets nationwide between 1982 and March 1986. Consumers are advised to remove these toys from cribs and playpens immediately to prevent further deaths and injuries.
