Plain-English summary

Supersaving Heating Products, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is announcing a voluntary correction program for approximately 4,000 "Super-Ser" propane gas-fired cabinet heaters. These heaters were sold by independent retailers in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania between October 1979 and December 1981 for approximately $250. The heaters are used with 20-pound LP gas cylinders stored inside the cabinet, which were sold separately.

The correction program is being initiated due to a potential fire and explosion hazard. The pressure regulator on the heater is designed to vent gas into the environment under certain circumstances, and the heater connector valve may leak gas if not properly secured. Additionally, the LP gas cylinders intended for outdoor use may vent gas if over-filled and brought indoors. The CPSC is aware of four fires involving these heaters; one incident resulted in first-degree burns to the user's arm and face, while the remaining three involved property damage only.

Consumers should discontinue use of the heater until it has been corrected and a new cylinder has been obtained. The correction program involves replacing the pressure regulator and connector valve at no charge and making a new type of LP gas cylinder available at a reduced price. The new cylinder features an internal float device to reduce the potential for over-filling. Consumers should contact the retailer from whom the heater was purchased to arrange for the replacement components and new cylinder. If the retailer cannot be reached or lacks the necessary parts, consumers in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan should call Mr. Durfee collect at 419-531-6622, and consumers in Pennsylvania should call Mr. Craft collect at 814-938-9170.
