Frigidaire Minifridges Recalled for Fire and Burn Hazard

About 634,000 Frigidaire minifridges may catch fire due to internal electrical short circuits. At least 26 incidents causing property damage exceeding $700,000 have been reported, including two smoke inhalation injuries.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: This recall is scored Severe (4) because there are reported injuries (two consumers reported smoke inhalation) and significant property damage exceeding $700,000, meeting the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports.'

Plain-English summary

About 634,000 Frigidaire-brand minifridges (models EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, and EFMIS175) are being recalled. The internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite the surrounding plastic housing, posing fire and burn hazards.

These minifridges were sold nationwide and online through Walmart, Amazon, and other retailers from January 2020 through December 2023 for between $36 and $40. Only units matching specific serial number ranges for each model are affected.

The manufacturer has received at least 26 reports of minifridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and catching fire. Two consumers reported smoke inhalation injuries, and property damage from these incidents totals more than $700,000.

Consumers should immediately stop using recalled minifridges and unplug them. The power cord should be cut, the front door marked with 'Recall' in permanent marker, and the unit disposed of according to local and state regulations. A refund is available at www.recallrtr.com/minifridge or by contacting Curtis International at 888-727-0198 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET), [email protected], or online at the recall website.
