What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source text reports 19 documented burn injuries with multiple incidents involving third-degree burns, surgery, prolonged medical treatment, and permanent disfigurement. This meets the Severe criterion of significant injury reports without fatalities.

Plain-English summary

Colsen Fire Pits LLC is recalling approximately 89,500 Colsen-branded tabletop fire pits. The fire pits are concrete open reservoirs designed to contain burning liquid alcohol, available in round, rectangular, hexagonal, square, or skull-shaped models ranging from 5 to 18 inches wide. They were sold online through Colsen's website and retailers including Amazon.com, Wayfair, Walmart, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta, and TikTok from January 2020 to July 2024 for between $40 and $90.

Alcohol flames in the fire pits can be invisible, and when the reservoir is refilled, flame jetting can occur. This happens when fire flashes back to the alcohol container and suddenly propels burning alcohol out of the container onto nearby people. Alcohol can also splash, spill, or leak from the reservoir during use, causing flash fires that spread and create larger, hotter flames that can escape the unit. Injuries from use of these fire pits can occur quickly and unexpectedly, causing burns in less than one second that can be serious and permanent.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping from the fire pits, resulting in 19 burn injuries. Two incidents resulted in third-degree burns to more than 40 percent of victims' bodies. At least six incidents have involved surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fire pits and dispose of them. Do not resell or donate them, as doing so violates federal law. The manufacturer has stopped selling Colsen-branded fire pits and does not have financial resources to offer a remedy.
