3M Peltor X4 Series Earmuffs Noise Reduction Risk Recall
3M is recalling about 40,000 Peltor X4 Series earmuffs sold from May through June 2023 because cracks can develop in the plastic cups, allowing overexposure to loud noise. No injuries have been reported.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: No injuries or illnesses have been reported. The hazard is the potential for overexposure to noise due to product cracks, but no actual harm has occurred. This is a voluntary recall of a protective device with a theoretical risk and no documented injuries, placing it in the Moderate category.
Plain-English summary
3M Company is recalling the Peltor X4 Series Earmuffs, noise-reducing protective equipment designed for industrial and occupational applications. The recalled earmuffs are black with green or orange accents and are available in over-the-head, behind-the-head, hard hat-attached, or full brim hard hat-attached models.
The earmuffs can develop cracks in the colored portion of the plastic cups. These cracks pose a risk of overexposure to loud noise and sound, which defeats the protective purpose of the equipment. Only earmuffs manufactured from March 2020 through September 2022 are included in this recall. The manufacture date appears in MM/YYYY format on the outside of the earcups.
About 40,000 units were sold in the United States through industrial distributors nationwide and online at Amazon.com from May 2023 through June 2023, priced between $16 and $26. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled earmuffs. Replacement earmuffs are available free from 3M, including free shipping.
