Bell Slope Adult Bicycle Helmets Recalled for Head-Injury Risk

Bell Sports is recalling about 2,360 Bell Slope Adult Helmets because the strap anchor can dislodge during impact, violating safety standards and risking head injury in a crash.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a risk-of-harm product where a safety defect (strap anchor dislodgement) can cause injury in a crash scenario. Although no illnesses or injuries have been reported, the hazard is structural and directly impacts the helmet's primary protective function, meeting the High severity threshold for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Bell Sports Inc. is recalling Bell Slope Adult Bicycle Helmets sold in dark green and light blue. The recalled helmets can be identified by an inner sticker marked "Slope" and "B1161X."

The strap anchor on these helmets can become dislodged when sufficient force is applied, which violates CPSC federal safety regulations for bicycle helmets. If this occurs, the helmet can fail to protect the wearer in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury.

About 2,360 units were sold at Target, Fred Meyer, Academy, other stores nationwide, and various websites between January 2023 and April 2023 for approximately $30.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets and contact Bell Sports for a refund. To receive a refund, consumers must destroy the helmet by cutting off the straps, upload photos showing the helmet with straps cut to [email protected], and then dispose of the helmet. For more information, contact Bell Helmets at 800-456-2355 (Option 3) between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected], or online at www.thebellgarage.com.
