MillerKnoll Eames Desk and Storage Units Recalled for Lead Paint Violation

MillerKnoll is recalling about 700 Eames Desk and Storage Units sold between October 2020 and March 2022 because the tan side panels contain lead paint levels exceeding the federal ban, posing a lead poisoning hazard to young children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a high-risk hazard (lead paint exposure) affecting a vulnerable population (young children), and lead ingestion can cause serious health effects. Although no illnesses have been reported, the theoretical risk of harm to children from lead poisoning warrants a High severity classification.

Plain-English summary

MillerKnoll Inc. (formerly Herman Miller Inc.) is recalling Eames Desk Units (EDU) and Eames Storage Units (ESU) due to a violation of the federal lead paint ban. The surface paint on the tan side panels of these units contains levels of lead that exceed federal limits, posing a lead poisoning hazard. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

About 700 units were sold through Herman Miller and Design Within Reach stores nationwide and online at store.hermanmiller.com, dwr.com, and other websites from October 2020 through March 2022 for between $800 and $4,000. The recalled units include multiple SKU numbers and product numbers for both natural-color and multicolor configurations in various sizes.

No injuries have been reported. Consumers should stop using the recalled desks and storage units immediately. MillerKnoll is contacting all purchasers directly and offering either a full refund with free pickup or a free repair kit containing a replacement panel that consumers can install with basic tools.
