What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves reported injuries including bone fractures and joint displacement (four reported injuries with specific injury types documented), which meets the rubric criterion for "Severe" classification (score 4) for a consumer product with significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Shimano North America Bicycle Inc. is recalling approximately 680,000 units of 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech II Road Cranksets manufactured before July 1, 2019. The affected models include Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100, and FC-R9100P cranksets. A crankset is the component of the bicycle that the chain and pedals attach to for pedaling.

The recalled cranksets have bonded crank parts that can separate and break, posing a crash hazard to consumers. The firm has received 4,519 incidents of cranksets separating and six reported injuries, including bone fractures, joint displacement, and lacerations.

The cranksets were sold individually and on bicycles sold by other manufacturers such as Trek and Specialized through bicycle stores nationwide from January 2012 through August 2023, priced between $270 and $1,500.

Consumers should immediately stop using cranksets manufactured before July 1, 2019 and contact an authorized Shimano dealer to schedule a free inspection. Only consumers whose cranksets show signs of bonding separation or delamination will receive a free replacement crankset and installation. Consumers can contact Shimano toll-free at 844-776-0315 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or visit the Shimano website for more information.
