Pfizer Recalls Nurtec ODT Prescription Tablets for Non-Child-Resistant Packaging

Pfizer is recalling Nurtec® ODT (rimegepant) 75mg tablets because the blister card packaging is not child-resistant as required by law, posing a poisoning risk to children who may access and swallow the contents.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product (prescription medication) where no injuries have been reported, but the hazard—accidental ingestion by children—is serious and involves a high-risk scenario. No illnesses or injuries are documented, which limits the score; however, the failure to meet mandatory child-resistant packaging requirements for a potent medication represents a significant theoretical risk, warranting a score of 3 (High).

Plain-English summary

Pfizer Inc. is recalling Nurtec® ODT (rimegepant) orally disintegrating tablets, 75mg, sold in 8-unit dose blister packs. The recalled product was distributed to pharmacies nationwide from December 2021 through March 2023 as a prescription medicine. Approximately 4.2 million units are affected.

The blister card packaging does not meet child-resistant packaging requirements mandated by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). If young children gain access to and swallow the contents, they risk poisoning.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately secure the recalled product out of sight and reach of children. Pfizer is providing a free child-resistant storage pouch. Consumers may continue using the medicine as directed once it is secured.

For a free child-resistant pouch or more information, contact Pfizer at 800-879-3477 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–7 p.m. ET), visit www.pfizer.com/contact, or visit www.Nurtec.com.
