SolarBlend Roof Tiles Recalled by Suntech Due to Fire Hazard

Suntech America is recalling SolarBlend roof tiles because loose connectors can cause fires. Consumers should turn off their systems and contact Suntech for a free repair.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with one reported fire incident, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk products where injury has not yet been reported but a hazard exists.

Plain-English summary

Suntech America Inc. is recalling SolarBlend roof tiles because the connectors between the tiles can become loose, posing a fire hazard. The recall involves approximately 300 installations of SolarBlend roof tiles with model numbers STP050D-5/ZCB (brown), STP050D-5/ZCF (terra cotta), and STP050D-5/ZCG (gray). These tiles were manufactured by Wuxi Suntech Power Co. Ltd. in China and sold through roofing retailers and installers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, and Nevada from October 2009 through March 2011.

Suntech has received one report of a fire involving six SolarBlend roof tiles. In that incident, only the tiles were damaged, and no one was injured. Suntech has been notifying consumers directly about the recall.

Consumers who have not been contacted by Suntech should turn off their solar energy systems immediately. They should contact Suntech to schedule a free inspection and repair of the system. Suntech will perform the repairs at no cost to the consumer. For more information, consumers can call Suntech toll-free at (866) 966-6555, ext. 3, between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday, or visit the company's website.
