Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Meijer Inc. are reannouncing a recall for Touch Point Oscillating Ceramic Heaters, model number PTC-902. This action follows the discovery of additional retail sales of the heaters after the original recall was announced in November 2010. The grey/silver heaters are approximately 10 inches tall with a black screen and top controls. The model number and UPC code 7-60236-58339 are printed on a metal label on the bottom of the unit, though some units may have a 12-digit UPC or a different UPC sticker on the packaging box.
The recall is issued because the oscillating mechanism in the heaters can short out, which poses a fire hazard to consumers. Meijer has received two reports of incidents involving fires that resulted in property damage. No injuries have been reported in connection with these incidents.
About 13,000 units were sold. Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio sold the heaters for about $25 from October 2009 through April 2011. Discount retailers, dollar stores, flea markets, and retail liquidators nationwide sold the heaters for various prices from November 2010 through April 2011. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled heaters and return them to the nearest Meijer retail store for a full refund. Those who purchased from other retailers should contact Meijer to arrange a refund.
