What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (structural collapse/fall hazard) where injury has been reported (minor bruises/abrasions) but no serious injuries or fatalities are documented, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products.
Plain-English summary
Dorel Asia SRL is recalling specific models of wooden bunk beds sold in the United States and Canada. The recall involves approximately 445,000 units in the U.S. and 21,700 in Canada. The affected beds were sold at Walmart, Kmart, and Target stores and online from September 2004 through September 2009 for about $190.
The wooden side rails that hold the mattress in place can split, causing the bunk bed to collapse. This poses a fall hazard to consumers. CPSC and Dorel Asia have received 23 reports of the side rails cracking or breaking, including seven reports of minor bruises or abrasions.
Consumers should immediately contact Dorel Asia to receive a free repair kit. Until the repair kit is obtained and installed, consumers should take down the bunk beds and use them only as separate twin beds. The model number, date of manufacture, "Made in Vietnam," and the firm's phone number are printed on a white label located on one of the bunk bed rails.
