Husqvarna Consumer Outdoor Products N.A. Inc. is recalling about 8,200 Craftsman power lawn tractors. The recalled tractors are gray, have a 19.5 HP engine, automatic drive, and a 42-inch cutting deck. The specific models affected are Craftsman 917.289080 and 917.289081 with serial numbers ranging from 012709A001000 through 031209D999999. The model and serial numbers are located on a model plate under the tractor's seat.
The recall is being issued because the tractor's parking brake can fail, which poses a loss of control hazard. No incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
The affected tractors were sold at Sears and Kmart stores nationwide and on the Web at www.sears.com from January 2009 through April 2009 for about $1,200. Consumers should stop using the recalled tractors immediately and contact Sears for a free inspection at their home and, if necessary, a free repair of the parking brake cable. Sears is directly contacting consumers who purchased this product.
