The recall involves 120-gallon to 1,000-gallon tanks that were converted from above-ground to underground storage between January 2005 and April 2008. These tanks were sold by retail propane dealers in the eastern United States during that same period.
The hazard exists because rust inside the tanks can cause the added odorant to fade. This makes it difficult for consumers to detect the smell of propane in the event of a gas leak, which poses a fire and burn hazard. The company has received one report in which two individuals sustained first and second-degree burn injuries while attempting to ignite an outside fireplace.
Consumers should stop using the recalled tanks immediately. The retail propane company that installed the tank will perform necessary repairs at the tank.
