Kolcraft Recalls Play Yards Due to Strangulation and Suffocation Hazards
Kolcraft is recalling about 425,000 play yards because a restraint strap poses a strangulation risk and a rocking cradle poses a suffocation risk.
What this means for you
Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly reports the death of a 10-month-old child, which meets the rubric criterion for a Critical severity score of 5.
Plain-English summary
Kolcraft Enterprises Inc. is recalling approximately 425,000 play yards sold nationwide from January 2001 through September 2007. The recall includes twelve different models, such as the Kolcraft Travelin' Tot, Carter's Lennon Travelin' Tot, Sesame Beginnings Travel Play Yard, Jeep Sahara Play Yard, and Contours 3-in-1 Play Yard. These products were sold at retail stores for between $50 and $130.
The recall is being issued after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received a report of a 10-month-old boy who strangled on a changing table restraint strap that formed a loop. Additionally, Kolcraft has received 45 reports of children rolling to the side of the rocking cradle attachment in the Contours 3-in-1 Play Yard, which can lead to suffocation if a child becomes trapped.
Consumers should immediately stop using the changing tables and rocking cradles. They should cut off and remove the existing changing table restraint strap and contact Kolcraft at (888) 655-8484 or visit www.kolcraft.com to receive a free non-looped replacement strap and a free repair kit to secure the base of the cradle. Consumers should always remove the raised changing table and cradle or bassinet before placing a child in a play yard.
