Plain-English summary

Country Home Products, Inc. is recalling approximately 15,700 units of the 2005 Model NEUTON® Cordless Electric Lawnmowers. The recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on January 23, 2006. The affected mowers are two shades of green, have a 14-inch cutting width, and feature rear bagging capability. They were sold under the NEUTON® name with model number EM 4 1 NEUTON® printed on the front. The serial numbers for the recalled units range from CE4049212 through CE4054902 and CE4061492 through CE4071541. The serial number is located on a sticker on the lower left side of the mower housing, visible by lifting the rear discharge guard.

The hazard involves the mower's safety mechanism. When the handlebar is released, the motor may continue to run, causing the blade to keep spinning. This malfunction also leads to excessive heat buildup in the wire coil inside the housing and in the safety key. Country Home Products has received nine reports of incidents where the mower and blade did not turn off when the handle was released, resulting in heat buildup. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

The recalled lawnmowers were sold from February 2005 through June 2005 for about $400. They were distributed via mail orders, websites, gas-lawnmower exchange programs, and a small number of outdoor power equipment dealerships nationwide. Consumers can contact Country Home Products, Inc. toll-free at (888) 294-5029 for more information. The company is sending instructions to registered owners on how to perform a free repair on these mowers.
