Once Upon a Family is recalling about 1,600 Memory Trunks sold nationwide from November 2002 through October 2004. The yellow and tan fiberboard trunks, which measure approximately 22 inches long by 14 inches wide by 13.5 inches high, were sold by sales consultants at home events for about $100. The product was intended for storing childhood mementos and was not designed for use by children.

The recall is due to a risk of strangulation and suffocation. The lid can fall on a child who is looking or reaching inside, entrapping them at the neck. Additionally, the lid can close and self-fasten, trapping a child inside the trunk. CPSC and the company are aware of one incident where the lid fell on a 2-year-old boy, entrapping him between the lid and the base, though the child was not injured.

Consumers should keep the Memory Trunk out of reach of children and contact Once Upon a Family to receive a free repair kit. The kit includes a warning sticker and a padlock to secure the trunk. Consumers may also request a free replacement lid that is not attached by hinges, which eliminates the risks of entrapment and strangulation.
