The recalled units, identified by model number SC-40PL, feature a removable white ceramic bowl, a glass lid, and a plastic storage lid. The "CorningWare" brand name is printed on the front of the unit, and the model number is located on a silver label on the bottom of the base.

The recall was issued because the heating element inside the cooker can drop to the bottom of the unit and melt through the plastic outer shell. This defect poses a risk of burns and fire. The retailer has received 10 reports of scorched or damaged countertops, but no injuries have been reported.

These slow cookers were sold through QVC television nationwide from January 2004 through April 2004 for about $30. Consumers should immediately stop using the product. Select Brands will provide direct notification to consumers regarding the receipt of a free replacement base. Consumers can also contact Select Brands at 1-866-663-4500.
