Plain-English summary
Emess Lighting Inc. and SLI Lighting Solutions Inc. are recalling approximately 480,000 Twister portable lamps. The recalled lamps are 38 inches tall with flexible necks and feature Looney Tunes or Disney cartoon characters on the plastic shades, or solid-colored shades in black, white, blue, green, yellow, red, or purple. A silver label near the bulb indicates a maximum 40-watt bulb usage and states the product was made in China.
The recall is due to a hazard where the lamp's bulb can become hot, presenting a risk of burn injuries to consumers and a risk of fire if the bulb comes into contact with combustible materials. The companies and the CPSC have received five reports of consumer injuries, including four burns and one laceration, as well as 12 reports of property damage caused by the bulb contacting bedding, carpeting, or upholstered furniture.
These lamps were sold in retail stores and catalogs nationwide between January 1997 and June 2001 for about $18. Consumers should not use these lamps near bedding, carpeting, or upholstered furniture. To receive a free retrofit kit, which includes a wire bulb guard and enhanced safety instructions, consumers should contact the Twister Lamp Recall Hotline at (800) 366-2579, visit www.twisterlamp.com, or write to Twister Lamp Recall, One Early Street, Ellwood City, PA 16117.
