Brinkmann Recalls Outdoor Solar Lights Due to Fire Hazard
Brinkmann is recalling Endura Contempra solar lights because the lens can magnify sunlight and ignite nearby combustible materials like mulch or dry grass.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with five reported incidents of property damage (grass and mulch fires), which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports.'
Plain-English summary
The Brinkmann Corporation is recalling approximately 79,000 Endura "Contempra" outdoor solar lights. The recall involves black and clear lights with a beveled lens ring around the middle, a solar panel on top, and a black stake mount. These lights were sold in single, two, four, and six packs.
The beveled lens on the solar light can act as a magnifying glass. When sunlight passes through the lens, nearby combustible materials, such as mulch or dry grass, can catch on fire. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Brinkmann have received five reports of grass and mulch fires caused by these solar lights. No injuries have been reported.
The lights were sold at home, hardware, and discount department stores nationwide, as well as through mail order catalogs, from February 1998 through December 2000, for between $20 and $85. Because the firm is no longer in business, the recall remedy is no longer available. Consumers should discard the product and not donate or resell it. Consumers can call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054) for more information.
