Ace Hardware Corp. is recalling approximately 22,000 Ace-brand shingling hatchets. The recall is necessary because the heads on these tools can detach when in use, which may strike the user or a bystander and cause serious injury. The hatchets are about 13 inches long, feature a hickory handle with a leather strap, and have a forged steel head with a hatchet on one side and a hammering face on the other. The word "ACE" is etched on one side of the tool head, and "TAIWAN" is on the other. The item number 2014710 is printed on a label on the handle.

Ace Hardware Corp. has received two reports of hatchet heads detaching. In one incident, a detached head struck a bystander in the head, resulting in a cut that required 32 stitches. These hatchets were sold at Ace Hardware Stores nationwide from March 1994 through April 2000 for about $18 each.
